From the slab to the fit-out

One builder from bare ground to a finished shed: Phil and the team pour the slab, stand the poles, clad it, then fit it out inside if you want.

  1. Timber posts braced in a boxed slab area behind a house, with steel mesh laid before the concrete pour

    The slab

Posts braced, the slab boxed and meshed, ready for the pour.

  2. Timber posts and rafters standing on a new concrete slab, with scaffolding, on a rural block with a shelterbelt behind

    Poles and frame

Poles stood, bearers and rafters up, bracing in.

  3. A steel-clad shed with two open bays and a window, on a gravel pad beside a post-and-rail fence

    Clad and roofed

Roof and walls on, roller doors and windows where you want them.

  4. Inside a finished shed room: plywood-lined walls and ceiling, dark carpet and a glazed door

    Lined inside

Ply walls and ceiling, carpet down, a door you can lock.

  5. A garage fitted out as a bar: dark timber panelling, a long timber bar top, lit spirits shelves and a dartboard alcove

    Fitted out

A bar, a games room or a place to watch the rugby.

Waipara’s wind line, village rules and rural land

Some 80 vineyards fill the Waipara valley, with farms around them, and the gear they run needs a dry, secure home: that’s where a pole shed earns its place.

Hurunui’s lee-zone map leaves Waipara just outside the zone, while Waikari, further up State Highway 7, is inside it. The difference is real for a pole shed. Inside the zone, Hurunui requires building consent for pole sheds and hay sheds; on the Rural Zone farmland around Waipara, Phil can build a shed of up to 110 m² under the exemption, so long as the wind zone for the site comes in at High or lower and the other Schedule 1 conditions hold. At about 67 m up, Waipara sits in the lightest snow band.

The village is Residential 3: sections of 2,000 m² or more, with buildings covering up to 20% of the site. A shed keeps 4.5 m from the road and 1 m from other boundaries, stays under 8 m, and can’t sit closer to the road than the house. Out on the farms, sheds need 10 m from local roads and 25 m from arterial roads, and farm buildings such as hay sheds are exempt from the rule that keeps other buildings off ridgelines seen against the sky.

Planning a shed in Waipara

  1. On a village section, plan the shed behind the front line of the house: Residential 3 won’t let it sit nearer the road.
  2. If your block runs up toward Waikari or the Weka Pass, ask Phil to confirm which side of the lee-zone line it falls on before you settle the size.
  3. The village rules keep shipping containers out of sight of the road, so a small shed is the simpler way to add storage there.
