Pole sheds for Oxford farms and blocks, North Canterbury
Oxford sits where the plains meet the foothills, and sheds here carry more snow than they do in Rangiora. We built a pole shed for Kevin in Oxford, and Phil quotes every Oxford job in person.

What we build in Oxford
From the slab to the fit-out
One builder from bare ground to a finished shed: Phil and the team pour the slab, stand the poles, clad it, then fit it out inside if you want.

The slab
Posts braced, the slab boxed and meshed, ready for the pour.

Poles and frame
Poles stood, bearers and rafters up, bracing in.

Clad and roofed
Roof and walls on, roller doors and windows where you want them.

Lined inside
Ply walls and ceiling, carpet down, a door you can lock.

Fitted out
A bar, a games room or a place to watch the rugby.

… Right from the quoting stage, through to the completion of the pole shed build, Phil and his team did everything right.
They did an amazing job, always turned up on time, were totally respectful and kept the building site very tidy.
We are so thrilled with our new shed.
Snow, zones and pole sheds around Oxford
Oxford serves the farms of inland North Canterbury, 32 km west of Rangiora, and sheds are part of its story: when the branch railway closed in 1959, its rails were sold off and reused in farm sheds.
Most of the rural land around Oxford is General Rural Zone: 20 ha for a house, a shed set back 10 m from roads and 4 m from its other boundaries, building coverage capped at 20%, and a 550 m² ceiling on any one building. On that land, a pole shed up to 110 m² can be exempt from building consent when a Licensed Building Practitioner, like Phil, builds it and it meets the Schedule 1 conditions. The Large Lot pockets on the edge of town run tighter rules.
The town centre sits about 236 m above sea level. That puts it in the heaviest standard snow band, which runs from 200 to 350 m, so an Oxford roof is framed for more snow than one in Rangiora. Above 350 m the standard building tables stop, and a shed on a higher foothill site gets its own snow design. Phil prices the frame and roof for your site’s height.

Planning a shed in Oxford
- Know your site’s height before you settle on a roof: 200 to 350 m is the heavier snow band, and above 350 m the shed is designed for its own snow load.
- To use the 110 m² exemption, keep the shed at least its own height from every boundary, road and house, and never closer than the General Rural setbacks of 10 m from roads and 4 m from other boundaries.
- On a Large Lot section on Oxford’s outskirts, keep 5 m clear of the boundaries (10 m beside rural land) and stay under 8 m.
Questions about building in Oxford
Have you built a pole shed in Oxford?
Yes: a pole shed for Kevin in Oxford, from the quote right through to the finished build. Kevin says Phil and his team did everything right, turned up on time and kept the site tidy, and he finishes with “We are so thrilled with our new shed.”
Does a pole shed near Oxford need a building consent?
On General Rural land, a single-storey pole shed up to 110 m² and 4 m high can skip building consent when a Licensed Building Practitioner does or supervises the work, its roof spans stay within 6 m, the site’s wind zone is no higher than High, and it sits at least its own height from boundaries, roads and houses. Larger or taller sheds go through building consent.
